A rainy day of joy.

At the party!

October 8,2013 was a big day! That was the day when we had traveled for exactly 6 months! Hurray!!!!!!! We planned to go to Okracoke Island to celebrate, but woke up to pouring rain. So there was nothing to do but stay inside. It looked like there was no way that it would stop any time soon, so we planned an indoor day. It turned out to be a lot of fun. Fist we watched a movie. Then we played Rummikub. Then we ate lunch. After that came the extra fun time; we ate jello and watched another movie. Has anybody seen Mr. Magorium’s wonder emporium? It’s awesome! We also watched Monster’s University. It’s great too! And after that, we played Scrabble. It didn’t stop raining all day though…        – Lillian

Emma and Sven with their van. [ Which is named Big Emma.]

Emma and Sven are Germans, [ Emma is from Illinois, but now lives in Germany] who travel a lot. They have a van that they travel in but we had them come to our motorhome to hang out. They left on one of the first days we were here though. :(   – Lillian. P.S. Check out their blog at gobigemma.com

A ferry ride.

eating lunch.

To get to Hatteras Island, where we’re going to be all this month, we had to take a ferry ride. So we drove the motor home on to a big ferry and then went up to the passenger lounge. It is actually really nice. There are lots of comfy chairs, some metal patio seats on IMG_3353the windy decks, and even a few snack machines. It was a two hour ride and we hadn’t had lunch, so after a while we went to the bottom floor where the cars are parked and ate lunch in the motor home. There was also a twenty-minute ferry from Okracoke[An island in between Hatteras and the mainland,] to Hatteras, but we stayed in the motor home for that one because it was cold, and the passenger lounge was colder. – Lillian

Beachy words

This is a REAL LIFE PICTURE of Hatteras Island, the one that we’re staying on.

For part of school today, Mom had us read poems about the ocean and then ride our bikes to the beach to write our own. My favorite thing to do for inspiration is walk beside the water, far enough from the waves that I don’t get very wet, but close enough to them that every wave hits my feet. Here are my poems:

MY BROTHER AND I

My brother and I are riding our bikes to the beach.

“Our helmets!” He calls.

“Helmets!” I repeat.

The tide goes twirling on, fast and deep.

RUN FROM THE WAVES.

Run from the waves,

don’t let them catch you!

Oh, bother the ocean, the high-tide has met you.

So, run to the deep,

and don’t be afraid;

for the pretty whitewater is only a game.

THE WAVES.

The waves come up to get me,

The waves come up to play.

The waves laugh at my soaking clothes.

I let them “Seize the day.”

-Lillian.

Sea Side Poems

One day I was reading some poems and thought I could write my own, so I rode my bike to the beach and got out my notebook. Here’s what I got:

Some people on the beach last night

forgot and left their trash;

Soda bottles every where,

a playground for the crabs.

Here’s another:

Little wave big wave, crashing down on me,

I am having fun here. Lifeguard, don’t save me.
